A West Australian gold hunter has achieved every prospector’s dream – uncovering a 1.4kg nugget worth almost $100,000.
The prospector, who wants to remain anonymous, took the nugget into Finders Keepers Gold Prospecting in the WA Goldfields and owner Matt Cook said it was exciting to see such a big find.
“It’s good to see people out there and finding nuggets like this,” Cook said.
“They’re harder to find but they’re still out there.”
Like a gold rush’
Cook said the prospector was walking around saltbush flats in the Kalgoorlie region when the detector began sounding.
After some digging, the hefty piece of precious metal was uncovered.
At the current price of gold, Cook said the nugget was worth almost $100,000.
He says nuggets of its size are found only a few times a year.
They are usually upturned by prospectors using heavy machinery, not metal detectors.
Cook says many prospectors are out and about in the Goldfields trying their luck.
“It’s so busy – I can’t remember a year like it,” he said.
“And gold prices are high at the moment – it’s like a gold rush.”
